It's a Wrap!
Department of Mississippi
American Legion Auxiliary
Rosie the Riveter Contest

A special note of appreciation to our
2006-2007 Department President
Shirley Turner for allowing us the time
to include the “Rosie the Riveter”
contest in the State Convention
program.

This was a tribute to the women who
served their country during World
War II. While the young men of our
nation--the husbands, fathers, brothers, and other relatives, friends
and neighbors were in service for our country in both Europe and the
Pacific, the women left at home took jobs and filled in for “their men”
wherever needed.

“Rosie the Riveter” became a symbol of all the women workers and
proved that women could rise to the occasion and do the jobs that
helped win the Great War.

We were fortunate enough to have a REAL Rosie the Riveter in the
contest.  Mrs. Emma Lou Bailey, Unit 28 in Clarksdale, was a riveter
during WW II. During her "time on the runway" at Convention, she gave
us a glimpse of what it was like...even crawling into the small places of
the plane since she was so small herself.  It was a true delight to hear
her story.

Other contestants included Martha Rodgers, Unit 50 in Calhoun City
and 2nd place winner; Virginia (Sweetie Bea) Gay, Unit 165 in
Cleveland and 3rd place winner; Jimmie Cabrol, Unit 165 in Cleveland;
Glenda Wheelis, Unit 1997 in Heidelberg; and Janice Crosby, Iris
Mace,  and Rosa Waltman, all of Unit 112 in Jackson.

Our judges were PDC Ed Merriman of Post 35 in Grenada, PDC Gayle
Gorden of Post 32 in Greenville and Sam Tolliver, Post 220
Commander in Mound Bayou.

Our M.C., who represented the “Victory Gardens” of that period, was
“Farmer John,” a.k.a. Inez McCain, PDP, from Unit 165 in Cleveland.

They all did a great job, and it was an enjoyable skit to break up the
business of the day.  Thanks to all of them, judges and contestants, for
a job well done!
