"From the storm-lashed decks of the Mayflower...to the present hour, woman has stood like a rock for the welfare and the glory of
the history of the country, and one might well add...unwritten, unwritten, unrewarded and almost unrecognized," said Civil War
nurse and American Red Cross Founder Clara Barton in 1911.
Barton's forthright words are among those enshrined upon the memorial-- the Women In Service For America Memorial--that
was built to finally honor the service of American women.
Dedicated in 1997, the Women's Memorial, located at the gateway of Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C., is
America's only national memorial to honor the more than 2.5 million women, from every branch and era, who have served in
America's defense.
"The Women's Memorial is about military women, but it's for all women," said retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Wilma Vaught,
president of the Women's Memorial Foundation that built and operates the $22.5 million facility. "Thanks in part to the continuing
generous and faithful support of the American Legion Auxiliary since our dedication, this is a place for all to discover and
celebrate the contributions of generations of women to our country, society and the world."
An exhibit gallery chronicles the history of women's service and showcases special exhibits including the new photographic
tribute, "The American Soldier," which is on display through Labor Day, 2008. The Memorial contains a Hall of Honor, a theatre
and gift shop. It also hosts an archive of items from military women, as well as an Oral History Program, in partnership with the
Library of Congress' Veterans History Project.
The Memorial's heart is its electronic Register room where visitors can access more than 235,000 names, pictures and
memorable experiences of the nation's military women from the Revolutionary War through today.
"Registering eligible women is the Foundation's focus," General Vaught stresses. "The Memorial will never be complete until
every eligible woman has registered because every woman's story is important to this legacy."
The Memorial is open every day except Christmas. To learn more about the Memorial and how to register an eligible service
woman log on at www.womensmemorial.org or call 1-800-222-2294.
